Education

St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is located in the heart of beautiful Austin, TX.  Our 127-year history makes us a fixture of this dynamic community, but we’re also committed to growing and adapting with Austin. The way we do that is by focusing on empowering our youth to love and serve God and others in and out of church, and in their lives as they make their winding way to adulthood.

Ages 2-2nd grade: Godly Play

Godly Play has been a part of the faith formation process for the children of St. Martin's for many years. It provides for children to learn through the Montessori method of learning as they discover how God comes into their lives each and every day. "The Godly Play curriculum engages what is most exciting about religious education: God inviting us into—and pursuing us in the midst of—Scripture and spiritual experience. Godly Play practice teaches us to listen for God and to make authentic and creative responses to God’s call in our lives.
Godly Play is a creative, imaginative approach to Christian formation and spiritual guidance.
Godly Play has a Montessori foundation with 40+ years of research and practice.
Godly Play values process, openness, discovery, community and relationships.
Godly Play models the worship life, stories, symbols and rituals of Christian congregations.
Godly Play allows practitioners to make relevant and personal theological meaning.
Godly Play nurtures participants to larger dimensions of belief and faith through wondering and play." (from the Godly Play website)
Classes are structured by age groups, with 2-3 year olds together in room 325, 4-kindergarten in room 328 in a classroom, and grades 1 and 2 in classroom 316. All rooms are located on the third floor.

Ages 3rd grade -5th grade: SPARK!
Spark is published by our own Lutheran Publishing House and is designed particularly for this age group. In Spark the students study the same Biblical texts as are the basis for our worship service on Sunday morning. They learn to use the Bible in a "hands on" approach as they prepare to enter into our Confirmation Program. The class meets in room 313.

Middle School 6th grade - 8th grade: Confirmation
Our Confirmation program educates and guides kids through those tricky middle school years. The Sunday school curriculum operates on a three-year cycle, so that each student can learn about the Old Testament, the New Testament, and Lutheran History & Catechism. At the end of their 8 th   grade year, students select a Bible verse and complete a faith statement for presentation to the congregation, and on Pentecost they affirm their baptism during worship. It’s a beautiful rite of passage that ushers them into adulthood in the church. Sunday school is held on the first level in Room 148 at   10 am .

Senior High Youth: Contemporary Issues and the Gospel
Our Senior High youth meet in a very informal structure coming together to look at faith and scripture in light of current event. They struggle with some difficult questions that are of importance to their generation. In addition this group takes one major trip every year and attends the ELCA Youth Gathering every three years. Our goal is to incorporate study, service, and social aspects into all that they do, while growing together in faith. The class meets in Room 150 at  10 am

Adult Classes:

Crossways: Crossways was developed by Rev. Harry Wendt, an Austrailian Lutheran Pastor as an overall survey of the Bible. While the program is a two year program, participants may join the class at any time. Many people have taken this class multiple times and always learn something new. The class meets in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday Mornings at 10:00.

Bible Study with Richard Buerger:
